2. Kylie Kwong
Among the Australian chefs who have successfully managed to combine the art of cooking with the business side of things, Kylie Kwong is rather noteworthy and has made a name for herself through her focus on modern Chinese and Australian cuisine with signature dishes like Family Food Fight. For many years, her restaurant called Billy Kwong has been attracting both Australian citizens and tourists. Many of Kwong’s specialities are based on native Australian produce, which brought her recognition as the founder of the new Australian cuisine. Billy Kwong received the inaugural Sustainability Award in 2009 from the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, in recognition of Kwong’s environmental initiatives, including the option for diners to donate to a renewable energy credits program, purchased from a wind farm in the Chinese province of Hebei.
3. Curtis Stone
Recognised in Australia and the United States, one of the most famous Australian chefs, Curtis Stone, has gone beyond cooking shows, opened restaurants, and published cookbooks. He worked in Australian restaurants before leaving to work in London, where he debuted his cooking career at age 18 at the Savoy Hotel. Upon completing his qualifications as a chef at Box Hill TAFE, Stone began cooking under Marco Pierre White at the Café Royal and Mirabelle and went on to become head chef at White’s Quo Vadis. His flagship, simple and elegant dishes like grilled steak are currently served in his highly-rated restaurant called Maude located in Beverly Hills. Stone has been able to combine the art of cooking with a good business strategy, which has placed him among the best in the market.
4. Jamie Oliver
Jamie Oliver, also known as the Naked Chef, is one of the world’s most famous chefs and entrepreneurs. His healthy cooking concept has made him produce many cookbooks, television shows, and restaurant chains. His specialities emphasise the use of fresh products for signature dishes like steak sarnie, which makes them famous all over the world. Oliver has also campaigned for better school dinners and for healthier eating and still does so through his books and other media productions. He was the owner of a restaurant chain, Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group, which opened its first restaurant, Jamie’s Italian, in Oxford in 2008. The chain went into administration in May 2019. In November 2023, Oliver opened a new restaurant in London, his first since the collapse of his restaurant chain.

Another famous Australian chef celebrated globally, Neil Perry is known for his Asian-inspired cuisine and iconic restaurant chain, Rockpool. Perry’s signature dishes often include seafood, a nod to his passion for fresh, locally sourced ingredients. His Rockpool empire spans several restaurants, and he has built a reputation as one of the most successful chefs with successful restaurants in the Australian culinary scene. In 2021 Perry opened another Sydney restaurant called Margaret, designed by Australian industrial designer David Caon and Acme & Co., followed in 2022 by a sister restaurant next door—aptly named Next Door.
